Geography Matters

  • Outwood Institute of Education Conference Centre Tenter Balk Ln, Adwick le Street Doncaster DN6 7EQ (map)

1 The ins and outs of GCSE Geography

This session will be taking delegates right back to basics by exploring the GCSE geography specification in detail. Having the time to delve a little deeper is so invaluable. Delegates will leave confident in understanding and using the assessment objectives (AOs) and the importance of key language within the specification. We will also consider the main challenges of teaching GCSE, links across the specification and common themes that run throughout it!

2 Nigeria, Nigeria, Nigeria!

We will start by considering where the case study of Nigeria sits within the Changing Economic World unit of study. Why is this considered to be the most difficult for students to access? What are the barriers and common misconceptions? We will look at developing a sense of place in Nigeria to stimulate students, consider essential background reading for teachers and look at common questions that may be asked.

3 Planning a great GCSE lesson

Planning great lessons is essential to outstanding teaching. This session will take delegates back to basics in GCSE planning through linking this session to sessions 1 and 2. How do you create and develop a quality assurance and review process to ensure a cycle of sustained improvement? How do you tackle those challenging lessons? How do we interleave ideas throughout SOL? What will inspire and engage your students? What are good strategies for home learning and enrichment and how do we tie all of this together?

4 Unseen and seen fieldwork at GCSE

Fieldwork is fundamental not only to the GCSE specification, but to good geography. This session looks at the whole process from start to finish through considering the fundamental skills that are the building blocks for good fieldwork. How do we make a seamless link from KS3 to KS4 and why is this important? In addition we will consider possible questions that could be asked in exams, looking at possible patterns and strategies to effectively teach it.

5 Recap, Recall, Revise in Geography

The three ‘R’s’ have become even more important in education in recent years with the widening of the content and reliance on case study and example materials. We will look at effective and proven ideas to help our students recap, recall and revise from the classroom to at home. How do we make it fun? How do we make it engaging? Most importantly, how do we make it effective? How do we effectively use gap analysis at GCSE to inform this and how do we interleave these ideas to produce an effective curriculum.

6 Fieldwork at KS3

What is geography without fieldwork? Nothing I would say - but then again what do we mean by fieldwork? We will consider what this actually means in practical terms. We will look at where there are opportunities within the curriculum to develop fieldwork both within the school ground and further afield. We will take you through all the stages and inspire you to go back to your academy ready to take your students on a geographical adventure!
